Fluoride is required for bone and tooth formation, and fluorosis occurs when fluoride intake exceeds the normal limit. Mottling and pitting of enamel caused by excessive fluoride consumption can lower one's self esteem due to an unattractive appearance. Preventive management of dental fluorosis includes de-fluoridating drinking water in endemic areas, using fluoride supplements with caution, and supervising the use of fluoride toothpaste by children under the age of five. Bleaching, micro-abrasion, veneering, and crowns can be used to treat aesthetically. The choice between these treatments is determined by the severity of the fluorosis.
