Reactive oxygen species are generated endogenously as well as exogenously. Excess production of ROS leads to oxidative stress, which can cause number of diseases. Asteracantha longifolia is a therapeutic plant which is utilized as a part of a few ailments’ rheumatism, inflammation, jaundice, hepatic obstruction, pain, urinary infections, oedema and gout. It is classified in ayurvedic system as seethaveeryam, mathuravipaka and used for the treatment of premeham (diabetes), athisaram (dysentry) etc. The aim of this study is analysis of phytoconstituets and antioxidant activity of Asteracantha longifolia. The roots of plant were collected and subjected to successive maceration. Further qualitative & quantitative study, fluorescence study along with antioxidant was performed. The total phenol & flavonoid content for ethyl acetate extract was found to be 0.605 and 0.794 mg/ 100 mg of dried extract respectively. While in case of ethanolic extract total phenol & flavonoid content was found to be 0.529 & 0.608 mg/ 100 mg. The DDPH assay of ethyl acetate extract revealed that the IC50 value for ascorbic acid was found to be 16.35 µg/ml while for ethyl acetate extract it was found to be 378 µg/ml. From the results it can be concluded that roots of Asteracantha longifolia having potent antioxidant activity.
