The safety enhancements of processing various blood components and their corresponding storage are the main topics of this review. A reliable quality system that guarantees blood components are safe and effective and can be tracked to patients from the donor is the basis of a secure blood supply. National Health Authorities should create blood transfusion guidelines, including the formation of a quality system, to encourage and direct this procedure. Blood component therapy allowed for the treatment of individuals with missing blood components, merely stopping reactions to unnecessarily transfused elements of the processing. Leukoreduction enhances the quality of separated blood products during preservation while also preventing several negative effects. Red cell protection and
Platelets are enhanced when preservative solutions are used to replace plasma, which leads to the plasma proteins and antibodies being reduced. Blood collection automation and separation of the consistent composition of blood products are improved through the division of the whole blood into different blood products and subsequent processing stages, such as the creation of platelet concentrate from several donations while blood can be broken down into its component red blood cells or platelets are stored in solutions instead of plasma, so antibodies, HLA-antibodies, and plasma proteins are reduced, and the red blood cells or platelets can be stored for longer by adding certain nutrients. Component separators and apheresis units are examples of automated technology that reduce the number of human procedures and standardize the blood component, allowing the doctor to more accurately forecast the predicted transfusion outcome. By reducing blood giver exposition and the danger of pathogenic contamination, doctors can more effectively prescribe the number of transfusions. The most recent improvement in blood transfusion safety for patients is a pathogen decrease in cellular blood components.
