Abstract

The importance of mastering Arabic speaking skills is an key element in language education. This is because, in addition to mastering the skills of reading, writing and listening, speaking skills are the key factors in producing a good student. However, the problem of speaking skills still has not achieved the objectives outlined. Although this issue is often raised, studies on the problem of Arabic speaking skills still need to be carried out to achieved the objectives that have been outlined. Therefore, this thematic review study was conducted to synthesize the literature on Arabic speaking skills problems among non-native speakers from 2012 to 2022 using NVIVO 12. A keyword search using SCOPUS and ProQuest identified 64 peer review articles. However, after inclusion and exclusion, only 19 articles were used for the final review. A review of this article identified 14 initial codes characterizing speaking skills problems, collected and grouped into four groups, namely psychological factors, linguistic factors, teaching techniques and environmental factors. The study's findings are expected to benefit future studies to address this problem of speaking skills, further becoming a guideline for language educators in teaching 21st-century speaking skills.
