Abstract

BACKGROUND: Shalakyatantra is the one among the eight specialities of Ayurveda[i], which deals with all the diseases and management of upper clavicular region[ii]. Acharya Sushruta is the person who has explained the Shalakyatantra in a systematic manner in Uttaratantra.[iii] Acharya Sushruta has mentioned 28 types of Karnaroga[iv]. Among them Karnanada, Badhirya and Karnakshveda are related to Sravanendriya. As Badhirya is impaired hearing, It can be correlated with Deafness (Hearing Loss). According to modern science, there are mainly two types of deafness. 1) Conductive Deafness and 2) Sensory neural Deafness. Vata Dosa Pradhan Badhirya can be correlated with Sensory Neural Hearing Loss (SNHL). AIM: To compare the efficacy of Karnapurana of Bilwadi Taila with Sarivadi Vati and Nasya of Shadabindu Taila with Sarivadi Vati in Badhirya (SNHL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this clinical study, total thirty two patients from the Outpatient Department of Shalakya Tantra of IPGT and RA, Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar, who were suffering from BADHIRYA [SENSORY NEURAL HEARING LOSS] were registered, out of them all patients completed the treatment. Patients were divided into two groups by simple random sampling method. In Group A   Karnapurana with Bilwadi Taila along with Sarivadi Vati for 1 month and, in Group B Nasya with Shadbindu Taila along with Sarivadi Vati for 1 month. RESULTS: 24.24% Relief Was Found in Group A while 37.21% Relief was found in Group B in Badhirya.  CONCLUSION: The study shows that, A better result in Badhirya (SNHL) was found with Shadabindu Taila Nasya with Sarivadi Vati (Group-B) in comparison to Bilwadi Taila Karnapurana with Sarivadi Vati (Group-A).
