Sustained hyperglycemia in impaired glycemic state cause oxidative stress damage to cell membrane and cell organelles leading to worsening to metabolic dysfunction. Phytochemicals in plants can be a better option in reducing the production of free radicles.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of methanolic leave extract of Costus pictus D Don on free radicle induced liver damage in high-sucrose induced pre-diabetic albino Wistar rats.
Methodology: Phytochemical screening and identification of chemical compounds in the extract was analyzed. Oxidative enzyme levels were estimated in prediabetic animals and compared with normal animals and animals treated with the extract for prediabetes. Lipid profile, AST and ALT levels were also compared between prediabetic and normal / treated animals. Histopathological examination of liver tissue was done to assess changes in prediabetic state and the effect of treatment with the plant extract at the dose of 100 mg and 200 mg/kg BW.
Result: Costus pictus D Don methanolic extract exhibited ameliorating effect on oxidative stress in prediabetic animals. This was evident with decrease in the levels of SOD, CAT, GPX, MDA, lipid profile parameters, AST and ALT level in animals treated for prediabetes with the plant extract. The inflammatory changes and tissue damage seen in histopathological examination was also reverting back to normal in treatment group.
Conclusion: The molecules present in methanolic leaf extract of Costus pictus D Don has definite ameliorating effect in combating oxidative stress in prediabetic status by reducing the free radicle formation, maintaining lipid profile and repairing cell/ tissue damage in liver
