Association Of Knowledge Of Diabetes With Glycemic Control: A Prospective Observational Survey Study In Jammu

Background: The high blood sugar can influence various cells and organs in the body if type 2 diabetes goes untreated. Side effects include eye damage, stroke, heart disease, and kidney damage. Family members disseminated genes that make them prone to possess type 2 diabetes and to be overweight. Methods: A prospective observational study based on questionnaire was conducted in GMC Jammu. A total of 100 patients with diabetes mellitus were included in the study using purposive sampling. The patients coming to medicine outpatient department during 1st November 2019 to 31st October 2020 with the diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus were taken for the study considering the following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: We observed that proportion of patients with good glycemic control was significantly higher in patients with knowledge of physical activity and smoking as compared to patients without knowledge of risk factors (Low physical activity (21.13% vs 3.45%) (p value = 0.034), (Smoking:- 40% vs 11.76%) (p value = 0.006). Moreover, proportion of patients with good glycaemic control was significantly higher in patients with knowledge of renal failure, poor wound healing, amputation and heart failure as complications as compared to patients without knowledge. It was found that good glycemic control was significantly higher among patients with good knowledge regarding insulin administration, insulin therapy alone and medication as compared to patients without knowledge. Conclusion: The present study revealed that good clinical status was associated with those who had good knowledge regarding the risk factors, complications and management compared to those with lesser knowledge
