Abstract

Medicinal herbal plants are used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM). The cost-effectiveness, side effects, and efficacy are critical parameters in DM treatment. Glycation increases the blood glucose concentration, which increases oxidative stress and may lead in inflammation. This study investigated the anti hyperglycemic and anti-lipidemic activities of ethanol extract Sida acuta (leaves) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic wistar albino rats. STZ was injected intraperitoneally (55 mg kg−1) to induce diabetes in wistar albino rats. The rats were categorised into seven groups (n = 10). Group I (normal control) received normal food and purified water, Group II (diabetic control) received regular feed and clean water, and Group III were provided insulin treatment (4U kgl−1), Group IV to VI received different concentration ethanol treatments for 21 days along with a proper diet and clean water throughout the duration of the experiments. The diabetic animals treated with glibenclamide (1.0 mg/kg) (glibenclamide + streptozotocin group; further in the text Group VII). The serum blood glucose levels were determined through the blood samples, and the concentration of total cholesterol, TG, LDL, and High-density lipoprotein and the enzymes of AST, ALT, and alkaline phosphatase were determined. Next, the liver, pancreas, and body weight in control and treatment animals were determined. Furthermore, the liver glycogen level was determined in control, diabetic control, insulin treatment, and extract treatment groups. The extract group exhibited considerable antihyperglycemic and anti-lipidemic effects. Furthermore, the wistar albino rat body weight and lipid profile in the extract treatment animal model improved considerably.
