Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effects of various pediatric drugs on the colour stability of the various aesthetic restorative materials used in the child subjects in an in-vitro setting.

Methods: 150 specimens were divided into 3 groups based on the aesthetic restorative materials used. Group I used Zirconia-reinforced GIC, Group II- Giomer, and Group III used composite resin. 50 identical specimens were made for each group of 2mm thickness and 10mm diameter. For each group, the material was manipulated and adapted to the mold. 25 specimens from each group were immersed in 2 liquid drugs: analgesics and antibiotics for 2 minutes daily for 1 week. The spectrophotometer was used to assess colour stability.

Results: After immersion of samples in the antibiotic liquid, least discoloration was noted for Giomer (2.64±0.14 at baseline to 4.22±0.08 after 1 week) followed by Zirconia-strengthened GIC (2.42±0.13 at baseline to 7.16±0.12 after 1-week), and composite restorations (2.34±0.05 at baseline to 9.04±0.06 after 1 week). Similar results were noted on immersion of samples in the analgesic liquid where maximum colour change resistance was seen for Giomer (2.64±0.14 to 4.86±0.04) followed by Zirconia-strengthened GIC (2.42±0.13 to 8.46±0.12), and composite restorations (2.34±0.05 to 10.37±0.14). These differences were highly statistically significant with p=0.01 for both antibiotic fluid and analgesic fluid.

Conclusion: Staining is seen in aesthetic restorative materials following exposure to antibiotics and analgesics with maximum colour stability with Giomer followed by Zirconia-strengthened GIC and composite resin. Such staining can be seen in both restorations and natural teeth.
