Chronic Periodontitis And Glomerular Filtration Rate In Chronic Kidney Disease Beyond Stage 3 : A Correlative Study

Abstract

Background: The present study was aimed to estimate the incidence of chronic periodontitis in CKD patients and to compare the severity of chronic periodontitis in the different stages of CKD incidence  (beyond stage 3)

Materials and methods: Hundred known patients of CKD with Chronic periodontitis were selected and were assigned into 2 groups : Stage 4 (n=50) and Stage 5 (n=50) on the basis of estimated glomerular filtration rate of the patient. Probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), plaque index (PI), and metabolic parameters (eGFR level, S creatinine, S urea, RBS) were evaluated. The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 17.0 software. The values were expressed as mean± standard deviation. P <0.05 was considered significant.

Results: The mean difference of PD was found to be 0.7 which is statistically highly significant (p < 0.001). Mean PD was 6.2 ± 0.9  (ranges 4.6-6.4)  and 7.0 ± 0.9 (ranges 5.8-8.1) in the subjects with stage 4 and 5 CKD, respectively. The mean difference of CAL was found to be 0.8 which is statistically highly significant (p < 0.001). Mean CAL was 4.9 ± 1.4  (ranges 3.6-5.6)  and 5.6 ± 0.8 (ranges 4.3-7.4) in the subjects with stage 4 and 5 CKD, respectively.

Conclusion: The severity of chronic kidney disease (CKD) (beyond stage 3) is increased with severity of chronic periodontitis which suggests the close association between chronic periodontitis and chronic kidney disease.
